Weird Al Yankovic's "Good Old Days" is a style parody of Kenny Loggins.
I didn't realize it until Kristen played "Pooh Corner" and I realize I knew the melody..

Go ahead. Try it yourself. Play Pooh Corner and then Good Old Days.

Now if I only could figure out what "Hardwore Store" is a Style Parody of!

I haven't owned too many Al CDs, but I thought the Food Album actually listed what each song was a parody of.

Al does two sorts of parodies..
Direct Parodies ("Eat It", "My Bologna", "Amish Paradise") and style parodies that SOUND like a certain artist but are not a direct parody of a song ("Everything You Know Is Wrong", "Dare To Be Stupid", "Frank's 2009" TV")

"Good Old Days" is a style parody of Kenny Loggins. It's not a direct parody of "Pooh Corner", but it sounds an awful lot like it.. plus probably other Kenny Loggins songs as well.
Do you see the difference?

I would dispute "Good Old Days" being a style parody as opposed to a song parody of "Return to Pooh Corner," based on both the theme and the melody. The main vocal line is virtually identical, and both wax heavily nostalgic.

Actually, that helps a lot - I'd been trying to puzzle over the similarities-yet-not-quite-match of "The Night Santa Went Crazy" and Soul Asylum's "Black Gold".

Or "Germs" and Nine Inch Nail's "Terrible Lie"
Some of his style parodies seem to be more based on one song ("The Night Santa Went Crazy", "Young, Dumb and Ugly" "Germs", "Good Old Days") while pulling in bits and pieces from other songs.
Others pull in a couple songs and try to meld them together ("Dare To Be Stupid", "Everything You Know Is Wrong")

Hardware Store is definitely an original, but it's styled like Mean Green Creatures from Outer Space sounds a bit like Thomas Dolby's Hyperactive! and Mr. Popeil sounds a bit like the B52s Rock Lobster.

The patter near the end reminds me of the local Tyson's Corner (VA) shopping commercial they had on the radio a couple years back, but that's pretty much it.

Actually, I wonder if Hardware Store is actually a style parody of Queen. There is alot in there that sounds like a couple of Queen songs I know (including Bohemian Rhapsody).
It's certainly possible. Al's definately exploring his "Classic Rock" roots.. ala Bob, Party at the Leper Colony and, of course, Ode To A Superhero
