Random Thoughts on the Move

I am so glad the move is basically over. OK, yes, we still have to finish unpacking and putting stuff away and such, but.. I am so glad that we made it, we're here.

Here doesn't really feel like home, not yet, but.. it's getting there. Having sat down yesterday and done something fun while eating lasagna (that is, something totally normal for us) helped alot. I'm trying to find a new normality as, like the cats, I don't really react so well to a huge change (and this change is HUGE.) I'm sure I'll be fine soon, but still dealing now.

Am annoying at the other agent, the actual homeowner's agent. He hasn't been the most helpful nor the most friendly. We have no problems with our agent.

I don't know the circumstances of the current homeowner's leaving, though we can tell she left in a hurry. She left furniture here, garbage (actual garbage. We have a fruit fly problem already,) some random crapola (a shot glass in the dishwasher, a pan under the oven, some frozen fudgicles in the freezer, a towel in the bathroom.)

The new place doesn't have nearly enough hot water and we wonder whether or not we can get that fixed or not (since it's someone else's hot water heater, and clearly a new one still, we didn't want to go and just fiddle with it.)

The cats... are adjusting, but clearly it's hard for some of them and they're not happy. Smokey's been incredibly clingy and seems to believe she belongs in the bedroom as much as she wants (yowls at the door until either we let her in or, like 1:30 last night, lock her in the basement (where we locked them while the movers were here.)), epiphany and mystery are slinking around and not been their usual selves, especially poor Ms. Baby. Cleo seems to be doing the best, crawling all over and on top of everything.

I'm just bone tired. Between lack of sleep (earlier last week I was normally getting up at 3, on the Friday before the move it was 2 and the day of the move 3) and really not being "over" the move yet, I'm still feeling just.. exhausted. I had a total meltdown at K over the closet last night and we both agreed I'm due for some quiet alone (game) time tonight.

I was happy with the Movers, Sunday Movers. I felt like they did a good job.

We've already brought out kitchen more or less the way we want it, unpacked a bunch of the clothes and the bathroom necessities, have both computers up and running and on internet (as you noticed if you check facebook) and have the TV on internet (but no DVR and that makes me sad. I want to talk to the owner and see if we can maybe work a deal. If not, I'm still sad.)

We have one potential issue and that's the downstairs storage. There's places in the finished part of the basement for storage, which is nice. The bad part is it connects to the back basement and thus naughty little kitties keep crawling through, over the stuff we put in storage and thumping around on the other side. We don't know if we can close that off with a board, but I'd like to.

A very special thanks to [personal profile] spydielives who stopped by yesterday with lasagna so we didn't have to worry about cooking (We got lunches done for this week, taco chicken (dump a lot of chicken in a crockpot, dump taco seasoning, leave on low for 6 hours.) but by the time it was ready to eat supper, I was already in the middle of a meltdown, so.. was really glad to not have to worry about that. Thanks, Spydie, you rock!

Speaking of Spydie, during the move, I found the piece to my Ignition Red Octane pad that makes the end turn into a USB cord. That means it SHOULD be able to connect to my Wii no problem. She let me borrow one of the DDR games for Wii and when my legs stop hurting, I'm going to have to give it a try. :D I miss DDR. :D Once again, Spydie rocks. :D

That's all I can think of to say. So... whee?

I'm so glad we did this now so that once the baby is here, the new place is old hat.

You might be able to find a decently priced DVR on Craigslist. That's hat we did because my in-laws don't have DVR service and it would've cost us like $60/month to get it.

Here's an option for a DVR that you won't have to bug your landlord for and can take with you when it comes time to move again down the road. If you have a spare computer kicking around or can spend maybe $300-$400 on a cheap computer build with good sized harddrive then look at http://www.mythtv.org/
There's also a OS built around mythtv at http://www.mythbuntu.org/

If you have the tech know how mythtv is better then TiVo because its open source and not under the death grip of the entertainment industry. You can keep recordings for as long as you like for one unlike TiVo.

You can also use any old PC with a decent sized harddrive. All you need to buy is a card that hooks up to your tv.
