Events conspired to get me to get the album at 10:00 instead of after work (I woke up late and couldn't make it in "in time").
So, while it's my lunch hour, I'll discuss the album. But since some of you don't have it and don't necessarily want to hear about it yet, I'll put it behind a lj-cut.
All in all, I think, given Another Postcard, I was hoping this album would be more Gordon-esque. It's not. There are a couple of fluff songs and nothing quite as disturbing as "Tonight is the Night I Fell Asleep At The Wheel", but most of the songs are the usual fare.
I know I've got the "Special Edition" with acoustic versions of "Another Postcard", "Maybe Katie" and "Second Best" and I can say the extra stuff is crap. Bah.
Celebrirty - One of my favorite songs on the album straight up. I don't know if they're knocking people like the Backstreet Boys or if they're knocking themselves, but this is a look at being a celebrity, both the good and bad sides (sorta). Musically, it's an interesting song and I really like it. It's original and interesting. Possibly a song they'll make a video out of?
Maybe Katie - The name in and of itself amuses me. *looks at
ecwoodburn* :) It's a solid rocker with an odd sample (it sounds like a slide keyboard. I can't figure out what it really is.) It's not bad musically at all. Not my favorite on the album, but I can see it growing it on me like "Too Little Too Late" eventually did.
Another Postcard - Some of you have heard this song already so I won't mention too much of it. It's about a guy who keeps getting postcards with chimpanzees on them. I think this is supposed to be the song they're hoping will make it back in the Top 40. I admit I can see it. I really do like this song and I can't wait to see the video. :)
Next Time - At first it sounds like it's supposed to be church music, but then like early 50s "Earth Angel" sort of rock. This is probably my least favorite song on the album. Maybe it'll grow on me over time, but it just doesn't really appeal to me. Perhaps it's the lyrics too. (You can always get it right Next Time, Next Time. You can always get it right Next Time.)
For You - This song is.. vaguely countryish. At least it reminds me vaguely of country with the rhythm and the banjo. It's a pretty good song. Another typical BnL love song. It's not bad at all. :)
Shopping - My favorite song on the album. This song SCREAMS 80s synthpop. It's just FUN! :) It makes me want to get up and dance about and shop and.. stuff. Hee :) Seriously, though. Another Postcard is a silly song. This is too, but this one is more fun for me. :) Oh, and
kareila, the Blue Man Group PVC Pipe drummers make an appearance on this song. :D
Edit: Another reason I realize I love this song. This is SUCH the Yuppie Anthem. Making this sound like 80s synthpop is so perfect if that's what they planned. :D
Testing 1, 2, 3 - This song is...it's from the same cloth as "Pinch Me", but not as amusing or cool. To be honest, I feel like this song could be so much better than it is, but it's not. It's not bad. Ah well.
Upside Down - This song just seems very Cake-like to me. Not like a Weird Al Version (he'd have done the voice too), but very musically similair to me. It's a pretty solid rocker with just a little.. oddness in it (It's hard to describe, but it's not just your typical rock number, there's just a little bit of.. oddness to it. Maybe part of why it reminds me of Cake.) Still, one of my favorites on the album. :)
War On Drugs - This is a song with a message. And the message is about Suicide and our valiant fight against the evils of the world. It's a slow song, but it's.. beautiful in a way I can't really describe. It just appeals to me in a quiet sort of way. I see this possibly being
ecwoodburn's favorite song on the album (even though the lyrics are very sad).
Aluminum - This song is amusing as hell to me. It's about someone who seems to be all that, but the person singing is like "I know you too well. Sure, you seem to be that great on the outside, but once you're inside, you're aluminum." It's another slow song, but easily one of my favorites on the album.
Unfinished - A solid rocker and a good song. This is usual Barenaked Ladies fare. Sort of a love song (sort of), like A was sort of a love song. Still, a good song. :)
Second Best - This song is very reminiscent of another Barenaked Ladies. No, I won't say which one. But I certainly hear it. It bothers me that this seems like recycles old songs. In and of itself, the song isn't bad. I just like to see my favorite bands change with time.
Take It Outside - A solid slow rocker. Not my favorite on the album, but not bad. Maybe it'll grow on me with time.
Have You Seen My Love? - An acoustic guitar number. Slow, quiet and.. nice. Very soothing. I like this song. :)
