This thought has been rattling around my head for.. a while, but I think more so lately because of Dungeon Siege 3 and Sims: Generations.
Backing up, the latest Sims 3 expansion pack, Generations, came out.. a week ago? By all accounts, it's a good expansion pack with lots of added gameplay that would make the Sims 3 game a great deal better. Honestly, I haven't read the reviews. And.. I just simply don't care.
But I'm impatient for Dungeon Siege 3 which comes out next Tuesday. Very impatient. Even played the demo twice just to get a feel for the game.
And.. while it isn't a shock, specifically to me, since I've been essentially playing RPGs more or less exclusively for over a year, it at least gives me pause.
To be honest, Sim games are.. not what they used to be. The only half decent sim game out there at the moment *IS* Sims 3. There is no.. Roller Coaster Tycoon 4, no SimCity 6, no Zoo Tycoon 3. It's Sims and that's just about it. And, honestly, Sims isn't what it used to be. Or maybe my tastes have changed.
Certainly there was a point, especially last year, when I needed to come home from work and hack and slash and destroy. So I played Dragon Age, and Guild Wars, and Diablo 2, and Fallout, and Oblivion. But also.. to some extent, the gameplay feels.. better. There's something satisfying about hacking, slashing and leveling up.
And at some point, Sims games.. just kinda got boring. I dunno if it's the game, which HAS changed significantly, or it's just me and a lack of imagination to somehow tell the same story with a new game system. At least the storyline changed between Dragon Age, Dragon Age: Awakening and Dragon Age 2 (not that I bought Dragon Age 2, but regardless.)
It's just kinda funny.
Maybe one day someone will come up with another GOOD Sim Game, something I NEED to play. But until then.. there's Dungeon Siege 3, Diablo 3, The Elder Scrolls Five, maybe even Guild Wars 2. Some good looking RPGs in my future.
