Poodle Hat - The Last Post?
May. 20th, 2003 11:52 amI have Poodle Hat in my possession.
And so, without further ado...
1) "Couch Potato" (Parody of Eminem's "Lose Yourself") - This is one of the two songs I heard before and the one I linked to a week or so ago. I really like this song. It's a great parody altogether (not quite as witty as Eminem, but... he's busy spending most of the song naming a bunch of TV shows where Eminem has more time being.. witty.) It's amazing how much Al sounds like Eminem. It's a rare gift Al has. It's a pity there won't be a video for this. It would have been great.
2) "Hardware Store" - Oh my god. This song rocks. Lots of great sound effects and lots of voices. I'm trying to figure out who this is a style parody of. Whoever it is, I may have to download some of their stuff. This song really rocks. This could be potentially my favorite song on this album (and it's only the third one I've heard so far.) Actually.. the song sort of sounds, in places, like Queen. I dunno if that's who the style parody is supposed to be, though.
3) "Trash Day" (Parody of Nelly's "Hot in Herre") - Note. I really don't like the original song (but then I don't like It's All About The Benjamins and love It's All About The Pentiums). This song may grow on me. It's not bad, but it's not my favorite.)
4) "Party At The Leper Colony" - I think this is supposed to be a Kenny Loggins style parody... or maybe Elvis. Actually.. it sounds a bit like both. This song is disgustingly funny. How many bad jokes about lepers and limbs can you make? Quite a few, apparently. Not a bad song. Still like Hardware Store more :D
5) "Angry White Boy Polka" - This is the other song I've heard before. I always love Weird Al's polkas. This one is no different. I love this one. Still wish Linkin Park had been on it, but.. ah well, right? :)
6) "Wanna B Ur Lovr" - This song scares me. I'm pretty sure it's a style parody of Prince... full of bad pickup lines and lines about how smooth and manly he is. Actually, it's funny, but still scary anyways. (Of course, Melanie scares me too, and I love that song. But this song isn't Melanie. I'm not a huge fan of Prince.) I dunno... don't hate this song.. but don't care much for it either.
Edit:This may, in fact, not be a style parody of Prince but a style parody of Beck. I dunno.
7) "A Complicated Song" (Parody of "Complicated" by Avril Levigne) - This song is too disjointed. I know Al had a tough time parodying it. Obvious question, then, is why add it to the album at all? So far, this is my least favorite parody. Like I said, too disjointed.
8) "Why Does This Always Happen To Me?" - This is the song Ben Folds plays on. You can tell. This song is great. I really like it. Very 60s piano rock (with a tambourine and everything). Funny too. What's really scary is the fact that I know people who think like this.
9) "Ode To A Superhero" (Parody of "Piano Man" by Billy Joel) - Good parody. Probably second favorite (right after Couch Potato). It's fun, but not quite as wiity. I think I'd have prefered a Harry Potter parody more than a Spiderman parody (I really DID expect one).
kareila brings up one good point. When I listen to Piano Man next, will I be thinking the real lyrics or Al's version? Only time will tell...
10) "Bob" - I love this song. It's a style parody of Bob Dylan, but every lyric is a parody. Truth is, it doesn't matter. I can see Bob Dylan singing this anyways.. even if it doesn't actually make sense as a song. I gotta give Al props for coming up with this many rhyming palindromes to sing.
11) "Ebay" (Parody of "I Want It That Way" by Backstreet Boys) - Well, it's not All About The Pentiums, but this is a pretty decent parody. I really like this one, even if I'm not a huge friend of the original. What's really amusing is I have to sit here and wonder if he actually found these things on Ebay (William Shatner's Old Toupee). Heh, I want a Pac Man fever Lunch box too! Yeah, I like this song.
12) "Genius In France" - A 9:00 minutes style parody of Frank Zappa starring his son Dweezil on the guitar. I don't know much Frank Zappa (except for Dancin' Fool) and never really considered myself a fan. That said, I like this song, if only for the strange sound effects and it's.. joined disjointedness. I can only guess he's parodying a whole host of Zappa songs. If I knew more Zappa, I might be able to tell you.
So, to summarize... love Couch Potato, love Hardware Store, Trash Day is OK, Party at the Leper Colony is great, Angry White Boy Polka rocks, Wanna B Ur Lovr... eh, Complicated Song.. also eh, Why does this always happen to me is great. Ode to a Superhero is good, love Bob, love Ebay, Love Genius In France.
I am not disappointed by this album . :D
Bonus Material (none of which is otherwise available off the CD. So no taking the Bonus moves off the CD as mp3 (which isn't terrible, but.. )
Home Movies. I had to see those first.
He starts by thanking those of us who bought the album instead of just (insert scowl here) Downloading it off the internet like some cad (scowl off) then goes over some of his home movies as a child with amusing comments (Here I am at age 8, before I turned to hard booze!)
The pictures were neat, but the Bonus Mixes are... less than inspiring. They're just premixes. Six of them are instrumental. One is acapella and one is just Al and Ben Folds.
The lyrics are actually neat. The CD is played while the lyrics scroll across the screen. That's nifty.

Date: 2003-05-20 11:35 am (UTC)I recognized maybe two songs in "Angry White Boy Polka". Three at most.
"Bob" rocks my socks.
