Job Stuffities
Jun. 25th, 2004 08:39 amThings have been developing in the job fronts (Not just mine, but Kristen's)
Let's start with me :) (In part, because it's me, and in part because it'll take longer to explain :) )
Two days ago, PBS&J won the Region V Contract.
Wait. Let me backtrack a little.
What my job currently involves is checking floodplain models for Regions 5 (Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Minnesotta), 6 (Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas (Does anyone else think Arkansas was named by a confused pirate. *lite imagines a confused pirate pointing completely in the wrong direction going "Ar! Kansas!"*), New Mexico and Louisiana) and 7 (Kansas (Ar! Not Kansas!), Nebraska, Missouri and Iowa).
The point is, my job is to CHECK models that others have developed to be sure they pass muster for FEMA.
What the Region V contract means is that, once they actually hammer out the details of the contract, for all the Region 5 states (again, Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Minnesotta), PBS&J Engineers, including me, would be responsible for CREATING the models.
I'd be going from Pseudo-Engineering to real actual engineering. Not only that, but at least, in part, the sort of engineering I wanted to be doing: modeling rivers. Not the quality, admittedly, but the hydraulics.
It's still exciting :)
Yay for the chance for doing REAL engineering.
Now, onto someone who is not me.
Apparently, the night IT guy is leaving soon. The boss took her aside Wednesday and asked if she was interested in working second shift (the shift he's leaving) in his stead.
The good side to this was, he was offering a full time position with a 10% raise.
The bad side included not seeing me (or, perhaps, anyone at all, since most of her friends down here seem to work) at all except for weekends.
We sat down and talked about and I think we decided that the best thing to do was try and see if we couldn't do better. Yes, it was full time, but...
So, yeah, that's about all I have worthy of posting at the moment. If I have more, I'll post more.
