hkellick: (Black and White)
Washington Post Editorial

For those of you who haven't read, or fully understood, my comments from the last post I posted (if you don't see it, it's because it was in the Politics filter, whereas this one.. is not.), let me get into it some more.

I don't want to be diplomatic. I don't want to shake the hand of the man who voted for George W. Bush and say "Good Job." I don't want to smile and be optimistic that it'll all turn out OK, just you wait. That's bullshit and I don't buy it. What I want to do is do my utmost best to stop that man from doing the sort of things I know he is capable of doing.

I want to fight. Not only do I want to fight, but I want to fight properly. I want to hit him just where it counts: in his political standings and ability to govern. I've tried to stay politically aware. I've voted and wore my "I voted" sticker as a badger of honor and I didn't get my way.
Fuming and bitching, though helpful for making me keep my level of sanity, isn't going to stop George Bush from doing the sort of things he feels he's mandated to do. It isn't going to stop any more of the 35 "Red" States from banning civil unions between gay people. it's not going to save the environment and it's not going to stop us from going to war.

It's time to stop being just politically aware and be politically active, to use my talents to the best of my abilities to stop George Bush from destroying the America that I have come to know.

There are two things I can try to do.. one I can promise to do starting right now... not only get educated but educate people on the true status of the world. Too many people have misconceptions on what's gone on in the world and what, specifically, George W. Bush has done with the world. I can't find the link to back it up, but over a month ago, the Washington Post had an article asking potential George Bush voters what they thought the president has done with his last four years. The outcome was staggeringly scary. Many polled thought Iraqis had been on one of the four planes during 9/11. Some thought Bush had signed the Kyoto Treaty.
Sadly, while I'm glad to educate those of you who read my journal, I would need a much wider audience to actually do anything to sway the people who voted for George Bush. Given the way this journal tends to run, that's probably doubtful. However, I'll try to educate all the same and hope that this knowledge or wisdom will move via grapevine to those who do not know the truths of the situation.

And also it may be time to join some sort of political organization, one devoted to the sort of things I believe in, though I'd have to do research first to see which organization I'd find that I'd feel right joining. It's easy to say "I'll join Greenpeace or The Sierra Club", but I know that these organizations tend to be a little bit more extreme than I (ESPECIALLY Greenpeace).
Or, you know, we could start our own ;) Livejournalers for Domestic Equity! Hee!
Or hell, maybe even look into volunteering some of my time for the Democratic Party. That way I could work with a number of issues I feel strongly about.
Seriously.. I feel the need to find a way to be politically active. I think that at least that way I could back up my words somewhat and get the force of an actual organization working for change instead of just little ol' me, one voice, far too easily drowned out.

At least that's my intention. So that when two years comes up and it's time to start reelecting Senators and Congressmen, I can try to do my part to take back the house, take back the senate and destroy That Man's power before he can reap too much new damage.

I believe it's time to get off from my armchair, stop being an armchair politician and go out and actually DO something.
Who's with me? Who's REALLY willing to FIGHT for the rights that we believe we, as Americans, should have? To hit George W. Bush right between his mandate and his agenda and do our utmost best, as truly good citizens, to stop that man!

Edit: Or, you know, it's too late to volunteer for the DNC because there isn't another national election for two years :p Duh :p
