I woke up in the middle of Armageddon. That happens alot around these parts.
I squinted my eyes shut, not ready for the day ahead. Around me, I could smell the smells of rubber and cement burning. Opening my eyes quickly, I took stock of the situation. The smell of fire and death permeated the air, but my bedroom looked normal. My bed was not on fire. My walls were not slowly burning down and my ceiling did not appear to be coming down upon me.
I jumped out of bed and headed towards the window and immediately wish I hadn't. The smells, the until now ignored sounds of suffering were coming from outside.
Outside, a giant raged, huge, angry and... sandy? Indeed, the thing looked like a huge statue, the reminder of some local hero or other. But most statues don't have laser beams coming out of their eyes, destroying this or that.
For that matter, most statues don't move either.
Suddenly, a door slammed. I jumped and then turned around to see what that just was. It sounded like that was my door.. I looked around quickly and grabbed the first thing I could, the desktop land and held it above my head, ready to strike at whomever or whatever.
I lifted the lamp up a little higher and suddenly felt a tug. The lamp came crashing down, the bulb blowing small, thin shards of glass all around my feet.
I looked down, swore and looked back up to see Ondine entering the room. "Hurry" she said, throwing a towel at me "you need to get up. That giant statue is heading your way and carving a path of destruction in it's path."
"How did you...?" I started to ask
"NOT NOW! Get dressed! Now!" Confused and tired, I just obeyed. I grabbed a pair of sweat pants and a shirt and tossed them on. I didn't think about questions such as: How did Ondine get into my house? What was she doing here? And why was there a rampaging giant STATUE coming towards me? Which is probably just as well, I imagine, because if I'd done that, I wouldn't have had time to get dressed and get out of here before the explosion.
Wait. Let me back up some. So, as I said, I'd grabbed some clothes, and ran out of the room towards the front door. As I passed the living room, I saw the statue was much closer and was, in fact, coming straight my way. With renewed speed, I ran towards the front door just in time to feel.. some sort of explosion Looking towards the side as I fled, I could see that the entire front of the kitchen was now gone, carved apart by some sort of .. something. Can a laser do that?
I leapt out the door, saw Ondine waving me to her car, parked on my front lawn and got into her car as quickly as we could. Laser beams were everywhere as I ran to the car, destroying the street, the lawn, the house. The ground moved, up and down, up and down, as the statue strided towards us.
I got into the car and Ondine zoomed off at top speeds, nearly knocking over a bicyclist as we fled. As we put distance between us and the statue, I began to relax slightly. Finally, I just needed to know..
"Ondine" I asked, still gasping for air "What the HELL is going on?"
She was silent at first, which made me nervous. Was she behind this somehow? Was that statue coming after ME? Finally, she spoke "Do you remember the robots?"
I thought for a second. Robots? Robots were all over the place here. They acted as policeman, babysitters, delivery people. In fact, they had just..
"Do you mean the million robot march?" I asked. Was it possible that they had done something?
"Yes. The million robot march. Where all the robots quit for a day and paraded into New York City, demanding equal treatment and equal pay. Do you know how that turned out?"
"I remember that we agreed with them and agreed to see about giving them what they requested" I answered "in stages, of course. So we don't bankrupt ourselves or destroy the fabric of society as we know it." I thought. The only correct answer, right?
"Yes, well... it seems that they've had a plan, from the beginning. They've carefully installed robots in all sorts of places. That statue." she stuck a thumb behind us "WAS a statue of John Lee. It was commemorated five years ago. Apparently, that statue had always been a robot. Statues all over the place are suddenly quote unquote coming to life and creating holy hell. You should have seen what Lincoln did to Congress."
"LINCOLN? But how.. that statue's been around for..."
"That statue was under renovations to prevent it from being eroded away. It was finally reopened last june."
"... Shit."
I was silent for a moment. Robots taking over the world? Robots destroying the very fabric of civilizations as we knew it? It was absolutely unthinkable!
"Wait." I suddenly stopped. "How.. how do you know all this?"
She looked at me, long and hard. "I can trust you, right?"
"Of course! We've been friends forever. Why.. i remember when you were a hotel detective down.."
"Nevermind that! I don't want to remember that! Bastards! Anyways.. do you remember hearing about Project "Nightgown of the Sullen Moon"?"
"You mean the never exactly top secret mission to meet... and, if I recall, with one gentlemen, DATE the women from Venus?"
"Uh.. yeah. That one. I worked on that project. I still have connections in Washington. They gave us advance warning. They told us, a week in advance that if they didn't get their fair rights, that we'd be sorry. We.. they.. we.. laughed."
"But they're robots! They don't deserve rights! We MADE them! We gave them the capabilities to finish the tasks we ASSIGNED to them!"
"Never you mind. That attitude might get us all killed. Or worse."
"Worse?"
"Never you mind that either."
"Hey Ondine?"
"What?"
"Where are we heading? Just that.. that looks like Brooklyn in front of us and, if these statue robot things are all over, I'd imagine Brooklyn is not the place to be."
"Brooklyn it is. That's where we're needed."
"Needed?"
"To end the battle, LITE. To either make piece.. or assassinate Prime Alpha One."
"The robot leader?!?! But how?"
"Never you mind that yet. I need your help doing something else first. But before all that.. we need to get into Brooklyn."
As we slowed down at the toll, Ondine began looking through her purse. She continued looking, growing more and more agitated.
"SHIT!"
"What's up?"
"The token. I've lost the token! Shit, it must have fallen down the grate."
"What grate?"
"I tripped in front of your house, OK? The ground was shaking."
"Well can't you buy another?"
"No cash. You?"
"Never grabbed my wallet. Grabbed nothing but clothes."
"SHIT!"
