So, yeah. I'm going to take a moment, in the middle of working on (yet another) detailed analysis in Texas to discuss what else is happening in my life (besides DNC, Fahrenheit 9/11 and other political stuff.)

So what else to say...
I've been doing ALOT of work with my mp3 collection. My girlfriend whined just often enough that she couldn't find anything in my collection (with good reason. I had a difficult time figuring out what to do to seperate out my mp3s. Remember, I have about 8,000. An unwieldy amount.) and strongly suggested I try it her way...
What her way is... is that if you have "a sufficient number" of mp3s by a particular artist, including full albums, put all of those in their own folder.
Everything else can be thrown together into a "misc." folder.

I basically did that. Threw a number of mp3s into folders, but instead of one "misc" folder, kept all the original folders (Rock, Techno, New Age and Celtic etc.)

Needless to say, that didn't work perfectly, but I now have 430-some folders. Basically, I decided that a sufficient number was.. three. If I have at least three mp3s by any artist, they got their own folder. This leads to some sadly named folder.. I have a New Kids folder (3 by them) and a Backstreet Boys folder (3 by them as well), but not a Britney folder (go me!)
The good thing about this is that it reminds me that I wanted to, for example, download/burn more Alice Cooper and that I really NEEDED nirvana's "Nevermind" and never got it and so on.
And it's quite a bit easier to actually find stuff in my ftp site again.

Not only that, but I've started actually putting the proper categories back onto mp3s. For example, instead of Alice Cooper, R.E.M., Metallica and Frank Zappa all being in "Rock", Alice Cooper is now Arena Rock, R.E.M. is Alternative, Metallica is Heavy Metal and Frank Zapppa.. well.. I'm not sure yet.
By and large, I'm giving all mp3s by a single artist the same category (for example, despite the fact that TMBG has dabbled in technopop, hard rock, polkas, conga and numerous other things, I'll probably just label the entire folder College Rock. Because, by and large, that's why TMBG is.)

I dunno why, but all this fiddling and bettering of my mp3s just makes me happy, despite all the work complicit in what I'm doing. I'll admit that the old system didn't work very well and was getting bulky and nasty. Hopefully this system works better.

Um.. should talk about other things, but... I'll just post instead. Gotta get back to work *sheepish*
