The wife and I saw this yesterday. A sign of how good the movie was was that my wife, who never could get into TOS, loved it.

Graphically, it was gorgeous.

Writing-wise.. the lines were great, the back and forth and the little homages to TOS (I'm a DOCTOR, not a Physicist!), the script itself... well... alternate universe, so I'll give them a pass with some of the things.. such as Uhura and Spock (!!!), but since WHEN do Starfleet Cadets end up even ON starships to check out some sort of itergalaxy disaster and since WHEN do Cadets end up as second in command? Where was Pike's Number Two (the one played in the pilot by Majel Barret.

And while we're at it. What was the bridge? I mean, I loved it. It was gorgeous, it was bright, it reminded me strongly of a freaking iPod. It's the iBridge. In all whites with all sorts of nifty screens and doo-dads that actually look.. like they aren't a bunch of painted cardboard boxes. Gorgeous and I loved them, but totally not Old Trek.

Also, the Transporters. Again, Gorgeous. Loved the effects, but not old trek at all.

And CHECKOV! I'M SORRY, BUT NO! The kid is a HIGH SCHOOLER! He was *17* for Pete's Sake. What the HELL was he doing on the Bridge?!?!? I mean, yes yes yes.. he's part of the original crew, but he didn't even show UP until Season 2. OK, yes, Alternate Reality.. but seriously.. in WHAT reality are we letting 17 year olds onto the bridge?!?!

Coming out of the movie, I look to my wife and FIRST I say "I NEED TO SEE THAT AGAIN!"

In short, I loved it. It was fun, it was a bit campy, it was gorgeous. And I need to see that again!

Thanks for this review. You've pretty much cemented that I don't want to see this in a theater (possibly ever). Now we won't bother to waste a night out without the baby on this.

It was a good movie, in and of itself. I can sort of understand why it would piss off fans of TOS, but from a creative storytelling perspective, it gives them a way to tell new stories without having to retcon everything already out there.

I want to get a full post up myself, hopefully later today, but this is my non-spoilery summary of things.

Wesley Crusher on ST:TNG was younger then 17 when he first started working on the bridge.

Yes, but that was pretty iffy, too. The only excuse for Wes is that he was already on the ship, was pretty much an established genius before putting him there (while Chekov's high intelligence is sort of but not really inferred), and had an "in" with the existing crew.

We didn't get any of that kind of supporting evidence for Chekov's presence as a freakin' 17 year old. He just kind of...showed up. He was adorable and all, but there was no explanation for him.
