Day 4 - More good news

Let me start by saying that, weather-dependent, K is scheduled to be discharged today, and I am glad for it. Not to say it'll be easy to leave the hospital and easy access to Robert, but that I NEED to go home, to a bed I can SLEEP in, to a non-flaky internet connection, to the things that make home comfortable.
We'll deal with getting in to see Robert day by day.
Once K is officially discharged, I'll call our friend Adam and see what the situation back home is. Lynne and Adam live a couple of blocks from us, so chances are they know things such as.. are the roads even plowed. If the roads themselves are passable, Adam has offered to help me get into my own driveway, and that help is sorely appreciated. And I can always leave K in Lynne's care while Adam and I clean out the road, so.. we'll get it figured it out.
More good news for our little fighter down there, he's continuing to do very well. The doctor told me they wanted him off the umbilical line. He should, as of this journal, be off of it. This is huge for so many reasons..
1) with that line gone, we can hold Robert outside of the isolette chamber Feedings don't need to be inside the box anymore!
2) with the line gone, he can be swaddled which will make a few things easier, such as feeding and burping, but also means his skin can tolerate cooler temperatures (which is one of those important steps he needs to get out.)
3) K can breastfeed every time she's here for a feeding. Only up to 10 minutes, but it's something. It will help her and help him.
Instead of the umbilical line, they'll just put an IV on him, like the one he had on his hand up to a day or so ago..
They also forecast that the IV itself can be removed Saturday, after giving him the rest of the antibiotics, which means as of Saturay, he should be fed entirely orally.
Which helps us deal with one issue we had today: our hungry, hungry little boy. Our little boy is doing so well that he wants FOOD. He's currently being given a solution of nutrients, carbs, protein and lipids that goes directly to his bloodstream, ignoring his stomach. Unfortunately, our little boy's stomach isn't getting full on the.. 15 ccs of milk or formula he's getting every 3 hours. He wants more and he gets cranky that he can't have more.
In a perfect world, the NICU would let him decide the schedule. He eats when he's hungry, but every three hours, but that's not likely to hsppen, but at least if he's being fed orally, hopefully we can find an amount that makes our hungry hungry hippo happy.
Our little boy is doing very well and I'm proud of how strong he's getting. Hopefully all this good news means he can come home soon.
