Reminders for the Dork-A-Thon (of things to bring)

[livejournal.com profile] trillain
Please don't forget DDR Konamix and a Pocky for me! :D

[livejournal.com profile] kareila
Please don't forget Videos (Midnight Madness, Something Completely Different)

Everybody
If you signed up for the Music XChange, don't forget your CDs! :)
Please, if you have a game you particularly enjoy playing, bring it along. I have, in this house, Chez Geek, Fluxx, a number of computer games, Star Wars Monopoly and probably other assorteds I can't think of right now.
We should plan who is bringing what to set up wireless LAN in the basement. Who wants to offer to bring what? :)
EDIT: If you want to bring your own DDR pad, this is cool and fine. I, personally, only have one. At least one other would nice if someone wanted to try vs. play :)

One week until the beginning of the Dork-A-Thon!! :D

LAN stuff

Thanks for the opening, dear s:)

OK, yeah, I was thinking this too. Anyone who wants on the LAN:

- Is your computer a desktop or laptop? (I'm pretty much figuring [livejournal.com profile] lite and I are the only desktops, but I'm looking for how many computers total we're looking at.)
- Do you have hardware and/or cables to connect yourself?
- Do you have routers/hubs (wired or wireless) to create the actual LAN?
- Extra cables or other hardware?

Answering my own questions:

1 Desktop, Win2k/Win98 dual-boot. I'll borrow [livejournal.com profile] lite's monitor for setup, then run VNC and put the monitor back.

I've got a wired 10/100 NIC installed and CAT5 network cable for myself, yes.

I've got a Linksys 4 port router and two extra network cables -- enough to uplink the router to the cable modem and connect one other device (computer, hub, wireless access point, whichever).

We have two laptops, a bunch of ethernet cables, a hub (if we need to bring it, though I personally would prefer not to.

But more importantly, we have Rendezvous. So if one of us runs the "server", we can create the network at the touch of a button, with the PCs and Macs alike.

I'm not familiar with Rendezvous -- is there documentation somewhere I could take a look at? I know as long as everyone's using TCP/IP as the network protocol, the router will take care of the actual network in terms of IP addresses. Does Rendezvous facilitate PC/Mac file sharing? (I'm looking for the real technical information on what it does and how it works.)

OK, nevermind, found a PDF on Apple's website. Between me and the router, I don't think we'll *have* to use it, but having it as a backup plan may prove useful.

Assuming that my laptop gets back in time for the trip (which it better):

- It's a laptop.
- I have a wireless card (Linksys thing that goes in the PCMCIA slot), and an ethernet cable (though that wouldn't be needed if we're doing wireless).
- Nope. Mark has stuff though.
- Nothing really extra, no.

I will be bringing my laptop. I have ethernet cables galore; I'll bring as many as are needed. I have a wireless access point that I can bring. I own a network switch, but I'd rather not bring it because that would cut my roommates' connectivity for the weekend.

Could you cover the wireless access point and enough cable to uplink it to the router without having all the hardware on top of each other? Put another way, what sort of range does your access point have and how prone is it to interference from other electronics?

I can bring the access point and an ethernet cable, yes. The range is pretty decent... depending on what lite's house is made of, it should cover the whole house, although the yard is a different matter if we're putting the access point in the basement. Interference shouldn't be a problem, except with a microwave oven.

Not sure how far outside we'll get, either, but I think, depending on where we put the access point and of course construction, we should at least get the basement & 1st floor out of it.

I'm on a laptop, and I should be able to bring an ethernet cable. I've got the hardware and stuff, so I'll just need something to shove the cable into aside from my computer. :)

[livejournal.com profile] alierak and I have laptops with wireless cards. We can bring cables, we can bring wireless access (although if [livejournal.com profile] coderlemming is bringing his, we won't bother), we can bring hubs, whatever. :)

From the looks of it, I think we're in business if you can bring a 4-port hub, and a 10-12' CAT5 to uplink it to the router. Maybe a couple extra cables in case things go wonky?

...or you and [livejournal.com profile] xb95 can fight out who brings the hub (see post below).

I don't think we'll need more than 4 ports off the hub, but then having extra ports might be good, too. Again, on the off chance that something decides it Just Doesn't Want To Play Nicely.

- Laptop. But I think I'm bringing an extra desktop for other purposes, so I'll have both.

- Yeah, I have lots of cables. Well, if I can find my 50 footer. I seem to have lost it. :( But I have lots of other cables. I have a wireless card though which would probably work better.

- I have a 16 port 10/100 hub that I will bring. I can bring an additional 8 port 10/100 hub if necessary. (LET ME KNOW BEFORE WE LEAVE! ;))

- Well, I have the hubs above, the extra computer I'm bringing, and cables I could probably bring, if needed.

Let me know, thanks.

*ponders* OK, it's 1am and I just posted a 2nd replay to Kar's post above. However, I'm now thinking a 2nd hub on the 1st floor (cable modem is in the basement) might be helpful if we have issues getting wireless from the basement to 1st floor/upstairs. However, my concern with long cables would be: 6 cats in the house. Cats like string, and CAT5 may very well qualify in their minds.

Will ponder this further in the morning. However, if you and/or Kar have further ideas on this (I could make up a chart somewhere of what I've got so far), let me know.

What's the extra desktop, linux box/file sharing of some sort? For the sake of logistics, what would you need to get it up and running?

OK, here's the latest: Kar is bringing a hub, hopefully an 8-port (see her last post). Between this, my router, and [livejournal.com profile] coderlemming's wireless access point, we should have enough ports & IPs to go around. However, if you want to bring your hub along anyway, we can experiment with getting one of the hubs going on the 1st floor. Or something.

I think I might have to back out on the Music XChange thingy...my laptop probably won't get back in time for me to burn a CD. I'm hoping I'll have time to reinstall Windows and Office and such, but I don't think I'll have time for much else. I'll let you know if I have a chance to burn something.

Assuming there's room in mark's car, I'll bring my DDR pad and offer it up for use. Mark's may not come, since he hasn't had a chance to fix it yet.

Remind me again about the movies after I get back to Boston.

And the games.

And the music. Ugh, my music is completely disorganized and none of it is on my laptop right now because I wiped it before I went to San Francisco.

Oh, and I can bring an extra soft DDR pad, of course. Versus rocks.

If I can find it in the mess upstairs, I will bring along Curses. I think John and Jen are the only ones (besides Mark and I) who have played this...interesting...game. :)

Don't worry, it's really fun. :)
