Review of "The Spine"
I think the Spine was trying to be Apollo 18. A lot of rockers (ranging from fairly hard and rocking to soft and depressing) and a couple of mini songs.. however.. it misses the mark. It's not a bad album, in and of itself, but I must admit I'm a little irritated that I KNOW about half the songs already, either because of Indestructable Object or downloading practically the same songs from their website.
Luckily for me, "The Spine Surfs Alone" is "out" (I'll try to get it at the concert), with *7* songs, only one I have/have heard of.
Track 1 - "Experimental Film" - A Good Strong beginning to the new CD. I definately like this song. :)
This is a song about a secret experimental film that nobody knows about, but we're all going to be in. A metaphor for life, perhaps? Also, the song is obsessed with Face Implosions o.O But hey.. that's just the way the film ends.
Track 2 - "Spine" - A small songlet. Not as good, but rather freaky. Not much else to say about it.
Track 3 - "Memo to Human Resources" - Hey? Wasn't this song on "Indestructable Object"? Not a bad song, though. Will he jump? Will he not? And why is he writing a memo to HR? The world may never know.
Track 4 - "Wearing a Raincoat" - I had this song before the CD (Released via their website). Loved it then as well. Stronger beat. Same fucked up lyrics ("Sleep is a gateway drug to being awake"? "Wearing a raincoat is flying around in a plane made of a raincoat"?) I'd swear this song was just a complete stream of consciousness thing, but.. I dunno. if it means something, it's currently lost on me. Still.. love the song :)
Track 5 - "Prevenge" - Another rocker. A little more straightforward song about a guy considering.. well... Prevenge. Duh. Not a bad song. I can see this growing on me more than it currently has.
Track 6 - "Thunderbird" - Yet another straightforward rocker about... something they call a Thunderbird. This song is a perennial favorites for TMBG fans "in the know" because it just ROCKS when done live. The studio version isn't bad, but it feels like it's lacking... something. It doesn't QUITE reach it's potential. Hopefully they play it at the concert, though :)
Track 7 - "Bastard Wants To Hit me"- Oh.. my.. god! It's TMBG doing Eiffel 65! Except.. with horns. Not much of a techno tune (So Loud was better).. but but but.. Oh.. my.. god. I FEAR this song will grow on me :o
Track 8 - "The World Before Later On" - A sad song about the future we were promised but never got - No jet packs, no hoverships. The Johns are sad and mourn. You should mourn with them. But this song won't help you to do so because I don't think it was that good. Eh.
Track 9 - "Museum of Idiots" - Finally on Studio album. With more horns than you can shake a stick at. A cute song and I still like it. :) Burn, baby, burn! Can't wait to hear this one live too.
Track 10 - "It's Kickin' In" - This song ROCKS. Hard. It rocks the socks off the fox in a box eating bagels and lox.
Track 11 - "Spines" - Spines are going to make you fall in love again. Another mini-song. This one better than "Spine", if as odd.
Track 12 - "Au Contraire" - Practically the same song as on "Indestructable Object" - SLIGHTLY Harder, More Guitars... and the "Right On"s are different.. but.. same lyrics and melody. Ah well. Still a great song. Possibly my favorite on the album.
Track 13 - "Damn Good Times" - Slightly harder rocker than the one I downloaded off their website. Still a good song. A breakdown at the end with Dan having fun with his guitar. Not much has changed here either.
Track 14 - "Broke In Two" - TMBG does the 80s! Funky synths, very catchy. Now this is TMBG as they should be.. catchy, fun and rather weird :D The funky synths don't hurt! :D This could replace Au Contraire as favorite song on the album. Catchy, fun and Synthy. Wootwoot! :D
Track 15 - "Stalk of Wheat"- Tuba power! (oh why isn't Joe on LJ?!?! :( ) This is another old TMBG song that never quite made it onto album. It's catchy and freaky, even though it's a much catchier and niftier "Number Three"
Track 16 - "I Can't Wait From My Mind" - A slower song, but freaky in it's own way. Don't make me come in there and get me! This one's OK, but doesn't strike me as that wonderful at the moment.
