This post is primarily for people like [livejournal.com profile] kareila and [livejournal.com profile] alierak who eat couscous. My first time eating couscous was, in fact, at [livejournal.com profile] kareila's old place. I tried it again yesterday and it wasn't bad, but not quite as flavorful as I remember.
What sort of brands/boxes etc. do you get couscous in and what do you do/add to it to help bring out the flavor?
Just curious.

We eat couscous as well. You can really add just about any spices to it, if you buy the plain kind. Near East is the brand I think we've used most often, and I've liked all the flavors they sell, I think. If you're using a flavored one instead of plain, adding a bit of olive oil or margarine and maybe salt/pepper can make it more flavorful. The original/plain doesn't really have much of its own flavor, so adding spices or flavorings is a definite plus.

A friend of mine (the one who introduced us both to it in the first place) used to serve the plain kind basically like mashed potatoes, and that worked pretty well. Just add a little butter or whatever else you use on potatoes and voila! :)

We too usually buy Near East kits, the "mediterranean curry" is particularly good. If you're starting with plain couscous, what Dawn said + try adding some garlic. I tend to serve it with something more flavorful than itself, most often producing some form of couscous-and-chicken.

It's a kind of pasta, except it tastes more like rice than pasta - very small grains.
