The Sims 3 Realization

Just in case you have ANY doubts, yes, I will probably be talking about Sims 3 all week for a week or two, at least until something else worth posting about happens.
As I was playing yesterday it occurred to me that my belief that... I could flit from family to family, doing a little good here and a little good there... and otherwise helping ALL my families thrive.. just feels totally wrong. MAYBE it's possible with a very judicious use of Epic Aging and occasionally turning Aging off, but I'm not getting that feeling..
Thne feeling I'm getting is that, yes, they provide you with a cast of interesting characters, but REALLY it's just easiest to play a family, maybe two. Because while you're off playing one family, all the other families are living very average, ordinary lives. They don't succeed, they don't fail. They, at best, just exist. They go to work, they pay bills, they have families, but they don't do anything to stand out. They don't seem to keep climbing their career tracks, they certainly don't go out getting opportunities or collectibles. They're... background noise.
And because we all age together.. if I'm off on one lot helping the Goth family succeed.. I might lose the opportunity to help Bella grow up and get the kind of traits I want her to have.
In other words, the fact that everyone ages is really throwing me for a loop (like, I guess, I knew it would...)
I guess I can see a situation where... with keeping a handful of notes (OK... just turned Mortimer into a teen two days early.. now to go back and make sure Bella gets an A in school so I can do the same to her...) and perhaps the judicious use of turning aging off, I can try to keep a couple families up and running, but only a couple. It MIGHT be possible to play more, but it might become too much work to keep up with what I am doing with who, and this is a game and SHOULD be about fun...
For right now, I'm still exploring the game. I'm still trying to get a handle on what the hell is going on. But I think, at some point, my plan is a reboot of the neighborhood and starting something like the Legacy Channel, using the Sim I'll create for myself and my wife as a starter...
