an interesting article
I have to agree with the school. They did the right thing. The girl was wrong.
It is unacceptable to see a guy and girl making out publicly (in a cafeteria or anyplace publicly in the school).
So how is it any more acceptable for two girls to do so? Because she was making a social statement? Bullshit!
Her point is valid. I would suggest another way to show it, though.
I do think the school needs to have a discussion with said English Teacher though. I'm sure he meant well, but.. well.. noncomformist acts can backfire simply because they ARE noncomformist. Here's a good example of how.

Having been in a high school where it was known sex was going on in the bathrooms and making out was pretty part for the course (straight couples publically, lesbian couples more privately, there wasn't much of gay couples). Civil disobedience however usually doesn't call attention to itself like a public demonstration does - and the latter is patently unacceptable in an enclosed public space.

It would mean more if they were actually lesbian and had no issue showing it in public rather than doing so simply to make a point. It would be about as ridiculous as having public sexual activity with another person of same gender - it's just as patently unacceptable regardless of whether it was meant to be enjoyed or meant to make a statement.
